ACTIVISTS TAKE IT TO MORAN

A number of long-time Democrats met at the home of Linda Laird to discuss current issues. As a result several attendees visited the Hutchinson office of Sen-elect/Representative Jerry Moran to voice their concerns. Items addressed included the "Millionaire Bailout"/repeal of DADT/rising costs of health care. Local, state and national officials need to know that we are constituents as well and demand their attention. Actions such as this, writing a letter or making a phone call have an impact. Spurred on by rant radio/FOX and the Tea Party, extremists have used these tactics to make their presence known. It's time for Progressive, Liberal Democrats to take up these tools and learn to use them effectively.

We're here! We're motivated! We're not going away! It's very likely voters will soon suffer from a huge case of election remorse. The reality of the results of the 2010 election will become clear and we're going to be ready for the fallout. An effort is already underway to recruit candidates and events are in the planning stage to make Reno County Democrats bigger and better than ever. The odds may be against us but when you know your principles are right you just don't quit. The Kansas 101st District Representative from Reno County has given the public a good look at just what the GOP and extreme conservatives are all about with his actions, spreading lies and discrimination via an e-mail. Watch for coming events and attend the monthly meetings to stay informed and involved as we move forward.

GOP WINS - KANSAS LOSES

It wasn't the results we had hoped for. Across the state, across the nation the power of money from special interests, a sorry lack of accurate information and a combination of voter apathy and anger shook the foundations of government and incumbants. We can be proud of the campaigns mounted by Kansas Democrats. Obviously being on the right side of issues doesn't always translate into winning. In an interesting development several of the GOP candidates booked space at the Anchor Inn alongside the Election Night Democratic Party. They ate and left as the reporters and photographers from the Hutch News stayed on to talk with RCDems. Best lesson of the night, hold your head high and be proud of standing up for what you believe in. Our congratulations to the fine Democratic candidates we supported - our sympathies to Kansas at the loss of outstanding public servants that served the state and the political process so well.

Democratic headquarters was a beehive of activity on the last Saturday prior to the election. About a dozen volunteers showed up to make last minute calls in support of candidates and to encourage voters to go to the poles. Though the reports from polls don't look promising, Reno County Democrats don't give up easily. And there's always that next opportunity on the horizon.

An unexpected call the day of the Holland/Brownback debate and the hospitality of Jon Powell added up to a pleasant evening for RCDemocrats as they gathered to watch the spectacle with Holland's running mate, Kelly Kultala. Kultala had joined the RCDems earlier this summer to march in the Emancipation Day parade. Attendees at the improptu event were pleased with Holland's appearance at the debate. None are surprised that Senator Sammy doesn't wish to appear side by side with him in further debates.

Jack Mace (KS House District 104) and Curt Miller (KS House District 101) appeared at the forum sponsored by Hutch CU, Hutch News and Young Professionals at the Ramada Inn to answer questions submitted by voters. It was a cool, crisp autumn morning, perfect for a parade. About a dozen Reno Co Democrats joined Jack Mace, candidate for KS house district 104 to show their support. Mace is a frequent substitute teacher in the Buhler schools and has gained the support of teachers throughout the county. It was interesting to note that his incumbant opponent was on hand as well but only to drive his vehicle with no supporters in sight.

Numerous voters were invited to get acquainted with Gubenatorial candidate Tom Holland. A sizable crowd including Independents and Republicans came to the Dillon Nature Center to hear Mr. Holland speak. The event was sponsored by the Taylors and included an impressive assortment of refreshements provided by volunteers. Both Holland and his staff were impressed with the success of the event and the hospitality shown them.

(Proof positive if I can manage the Internet then anybody can) A new crop of Young Democrats joined in the large crowd on hand to support Tom Holland in his debate with Senator Sam. Forgive me for stooping to partisan sniping but when I saw the stickers favored by the yellow-shirted group reading "I'm a Brown-backer" couldn't help thinking it should instead read "I'm a Brown-noser". This because those who showed up were treated to free transportation, free shirts, free lunch and free admission to the fair - all courtesy of our Senator Sam. Money can indeed buy a lot of things. Let's just hope Kansas isn't for sale in November. It's up to us, people!

WHAT WE'RE AIMING FOR

According to all volunteers who worked throughout the fair, this was a common remark: "I don't want Brownback for governor" (and some even stronger comments from members of his own party). Whether or not this negative response can bring moderate voters into Tom Holland's camp is largely dependent on us. Talk to undecided or waivering voters. Acquaint yourself with Tom's positions, history and accomplishments at working in a bipartisan effort to improve Kansas. He's working hard to defeat the extremism that's invading our state. We need to pitch in and help him in that effort.

Following a well attended Last Thursday meeting of Reno County Democrats, ideas were thrown around for a slogan or sign that might help spread the truth about this election season's Democratic candidates. Putting their heads together Frances Garcia and James Taylor came up with the catch phrase above. In this time when the GOP is rushing to embrace the extremism of candidates such as Huelscamp, Kobach and Senator Sam, Democrats do indeed appear to be the party of moderation. This is the message that needs to get out. Write a letter, talk to a friend and let Kansans know that Democrats have the sensible answers to the problems the state is facing. Then volunteer and vote to put them in office!

Is this the new face of political leadership? One can only hope it's a fad like pet rocks or cabbage patch kids but the attention being paid to psuedo celebrities such as Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Rand Paul etc. is alarming. There are signs of hope as a recent report indicated that moderate Kansans are showing some skepticism towards such TB notables as Kris Kobach. I am reminded of the hype accompanying a new book/movie/soap - the media is blanketed with news of the item. People hear the brand name repeatedly and the psychology of salesmanship works is magic. Only after the money's spent (vote is cast?) do they discover they've been had. The promises were empty; the product doesn't perform; the candidate is a front for special interests. The solution is to become as informed as possible and encourage others to do the same. Used up tea bags belong in the trash.

JUST THE BEGINNING!

This is how it starts. One yard sign at a time. One phone call to a friend. One afternoon helping a candidate share their message by phone or by knocking on doors. It would be wonderful if Democrats could just sit back and let the prevailing winds blow them into office but it just won't work in Kansas. I've talked to enough moderate Republicans to know that the support is there. We just have to earn it!

It's a sad state of affairs when Kansans say they can't run for office because it might hurt their business; when employees are literally afraid for their job if they "go public" with their support of a Democratic candidate; when eligible voters stay home because "you can't win against the Republicans". These are direct quotes I have heard over the past few years.

Unless you are ready to accept the extremism represented by Birthers, the Tea Party and believers of Beck, Limbaugh and their ilk, it's time to realize that YOU CAN make a difference. As important as it is to vote, it's just not enough. There's nothing radical in the positions held by our Democratic candidates. They are moderate and practical in their common sense approach to addressing the challenges faced in Kansas and the United States. But they can't succeed without our full support. Resolve today to do all you can in this critical election year - or live with the consequences.

Kansas State Senator and running mate for Tom Holland, Kelly Kultala will join Reno County Democrats to appear in the August 7 Emancipation Day Parade. This is Kultala's second trip to Hutchinson recently as she was the featured luncheon speaker at the Democratic Women's convention in late June. Reno County is calculated by some to be key to victories by several of this year's candidates. It's up to us not to disappoint when called upon to support them.

Temperatures were a little cooler as Reno County Democrats gathered in the shade at the courthouse to hear KS 1st District candidate Alan Jilka. Jack Mace running for state 104th district representative greeted Jilka and discussed campaign plans. Most agree Jilka's Republican opponent Heulscamp is at the far right fringes of politics potentially making him easier to defeat. There are several opportunities for Democratic gains in Kansas this fall but it will take a whole hearted effort.

A large enthusiastic crowd turned out for ice cream, baked goods and to hear from candidates at the unofficial kick-off of the Democratic election headquarters. Continuing a growing trend there were several new faces in the crowd. Two candidates competing for the US Senate seat made presentations to the group. Lisa Johnston is shown answering questions after her talk. Judge Randy McEwen (shown) and Trish Rose, both running for District Court judge shared their views on the office. Most notable was the respectful tone set by the candidates especially when contrasted with the charges of lying and distortion seen in ads from GOP candidates.

The headquarters will open officially on September 1st, Tuesday-Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Signs, buttons and literature will be available through the general election. There will be fundraisers, monthly meetings and other activities in the coming months so there's no excuse not to be informed and active as the season progresses. All Reno County Democrats are encouraged to do their part to help our candidates succeed.

Clouds, sprinkles and competintion from the TEA-Baggers' entry couldn't keep loyal Democrats from making an outstanding showing at the Hutchinson celebration honoring America's birthday. If you include the many other Democrats that helped with entries from Democratic candidates Jack Mace, Trish Rose and Randy McEwen the response was even more impressive. Many thanks to all who turned out in support. There will be other opportunities during this election season for everyone to get involved.

RENO COUNTY DEMOCRATIC WOMEN SHINE

It was from all accounts a stunning success. The state convention for Kansas Democratic Women featured a candidate forum, lively discussions (Pres. Betty Taylor addressing delegates), successful fundraising efforts (Treas. Judy Langley models shirt at live auction) and entertainment for attendees from across the state. This was a prime example of the strength in unity and cooperation among Democrats.

SHOLLENBERGER ON THE "BANDWAGON"

Several RCDems joined Charles Schollenberger at the recent Abbyville Rodeo Parade. He was surprisingly well received by the crowd as he stood in the back of an antique wagon drawn appropriately enough by two sturdy mules. At the reviewing stand he quipped to the crowd that he was promising "2 mules in every corral", paraphrasing Hoovers promise of a chicken in every pot. Later that day he made an appearance at the newly formed NOW chapter in Hutchinson. Schollenberger cut his teeth in politics as a teenager when he fought for the voting age to be set at 18. He noted in his talk with the group that the change allowing young voters to take part in presidential elections might have shown the effect of that amendment to the Constitution back in the 60s. A lifelong activist, he has never served in public office but his career in journalism for The Hutchinson News and then The Kansas City Star made for an incredibly well informed candidate. He laughed as he noted that lack of involvement in politics could prove to be a plus in the anti-incumbant climate of the country.

There was a good turnout to meet and greet gubenatorial candidate Tom Holland. He is a very impressive speaker and should really outshine Senator Sam at debates if given the opportunity. I encourage everyone to check out Holland's webpage to read more about this remarkable Kansan who is truly deserving of our support. We have been spoiled since 2002 with the leadership of first Sebelius and then Parkinson who gave some balance and sanity to Topeka. It's a sure thing that this will NOT be the case if Senator Sam takes over the reins. Democrats and what ever moderate GOP will be willing to stand up to him will have a difficult time trying to stop the steamroller of Sam and the conservatives if they take charge.

PALIN'S POWER?

This shot from Palin's Wichita appearance was forwarded from a member of the Progressive caucus who took delight in telling those around him that he got his ticket for their $37 to $90+ seats for just $15. Seems they were practically giving them away as the event approached and still there were many empty seats. He also reported the many technical difficulties (sound system, large projection screen etc.) that plagued the show. Is Sarah's shine starting to tarnish? We can only hope so. But there will always be those as at the NRA convention eager to hear her baldface lies that "given the chance, Obama would gut the second amendment". Hard to take that faction of voters serious when they buy into her nonsense but unfortunately they are very motivated. Which means we had best be even more motivated!

There was a high energy level at this year's gathering of Kansas Democrats at Washington Days. Attendees were treated to speeches from the growing roster of candidates for the 2010 election including Gubenatorial candidate Tom Holland. Senator Holland should push for as many debates as possible as he proved to be an excellent speaker especially compared to the lack luster style of Senator Sam. There was a substantial response to the Reno County display seeking input regarding the State Fair Booth. This meeting prompted a lot of worthwhile discussions and idea sharing from Democrats throughout Kansas. It had one of the largest number of participants to date, showing the growing enthusiasm and willingness to support Democratic candidates this fall.

It's been a year since the passage of the stimulus bill. Here's the graphic illustration of its effect. This must be the clearest demonstration of what those who are cheering for failure of Obama's administration fears the most. There is progress being made. There are numerous articles being published describing the hypocrisy of many conservatives Republicans in Congress decrying the program while touting the projects it has brought to their state/districts. It is indeed a slow painful process but the trend is clear so rant radio is going full bore to discredit what is obvious.

UNDERDOGS UNITE!!!!

Anyone who knows me knows I am not a rabid sports fan. When the hype was building over the superbowl, I knew early on I was on the side of the Saints. I was delighted when President Obama went out on a limb stating his support of the team. Some criticized his choosing a favorite, but as he stated "I'm for the underdog". This summed up my sentiments exactly. New Orleans needed a boost; the establishment needed to be shaken up; and after hearing "Maja- Rushie" wax eloquent over the unlikelihood of the Saints coming up with a win I was more adamant in my support than I have ever been over a superbowl team.

So here's the challenge to Kansas Democrats: if the Saints can fight their way back from a ten point deficit against an award winning quarterback, then we should take heart and be willing to stand up for our beliefs. Democrats are engaged in a contest against a potential governor who votes against a bill that includes huge amounts of earmarks he boasts of benefiting Kansas. Ditto for the darling of the conservatives who wants to be our next senator. Both are affiliated with a radical group that has co-opted religion for political means. A Hutchinson legislator who has been the subject of charges of nepotism is now set to benefit financially by representing some of his generous donors in a suit he has filed against our state! It is time for Democrats to stand up and fight for honest, capable leadership in Kansas. No doubt about it - we are the underdogs. We have the talent, we have the incentive now we need the will to win!

OBAMA REACHES OUT

He proposed new drilling, safe nuclear power plants, small business tax credits, spending freeze, deficit reduction - and the Republican reaction: NYET, NINE, NON, NO WAY! I heard GOP leadership actually say he didn't offer us anything! Ignoring the reality of the President's message, when they did acknowledge suggestions to cut spending, they dismissed it as not enough! What don't they understand about you have to start somewhere? Saving hundreds of millions of dollars sounded pretty impressive to me. Their true nature has once again been revealed for all those not too blinded by partisanship to see.

Have I been thrilled with progress from the Oval Office to date? No. But do I believe that with the cooperation of Congress there could be real headway? Absolutely. We have candidates who are willing to do the work necessary; Alan Jilka running for the Big 1st District and Charles Schollenberger standing against Tiahrt or Moran. If we just fold up our tents and refuse to fight for better representation we all know where it leads - NOWHERE. There are voting records and past positions that leave Republicans vulnerable but it requires the effort of us all to get the information out. Thanks to the Supreme Court's decision it's more important than ever that individuals fight for their voices to be heard. Obama made a plea for cooperation saying he couldn't do the job alone. If the right in Congress isn't willing to support the way forward it's up to us to lend the support needed to turn the country around. The GOP establishment, rant radio and right wing extremists want this administration to fail. In our silence we would be supporting their agenda.

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?!

I'm wondering if everyone was as stunned and angered as I when I heard of the recent Supreme Court decision conferring "person hood" on corporations! At a time when Americans have become aware of the abuses and corrupting influences that already exist in the world of campaign finance they have not only greatly added to the existing problems by allowing outside forces -NOT PEOPLE - free range to support attack ads, but have struck down all existing state laws that place restrictions on contributions. Pouring salt into the wounds the decision, by citing the first amendment to the constitution they have blocked any possibility of corrective legislation. There is a bi-partisan bill in the house -H.R. 1826 - that has languished for some time that calls for public financing to be instituted but short of either ratifying an amendment to the constitution or all out revolution - neither of which is likely - there is no solution except for voters to soundly reject candidates who accept or do not condemn this practice. How ironic that this stormy decade is bookmarked by the Supreme Court decision in 2000 that gave us W and this decision in 2010 that sanctions the selling of the soul of the political process. The very least we can do is to make our anger known!

CLUELESS!!!!!!!

The things I do in the name of the Democratic Party! Attended the Tiahrt "Town Hall" meeting at HCC Stringer Fine Arts Center thinking it might actually be an opportunity for a democratic exchange of ideas. Oh foolish child that I am! This should have been billed as a right-wing rally. Todd devoted an hour and 15 minutes to "Liberal Bashing" to the delight of the crowd (with one notable exception).

I expected a slanted view of the Health Care Reform struggles but in light of the articles in The Hutchinson News of late December, thought he might actually try to address the problems of ALL Kansans. The graphic accompanying one of the articles revealed the depths of the need in our state, especially in the western half. SIXTEEN counties reported that one fifth - 20% or more of its non-elderly residents were uninsured. In addition it listed NINE counties with 25% up to almost 30% (!) of the non-elderly are without insurance.

But take heart, Todd expressed his support for unregulated campaign contributions as long as they were made public in 24 hours of receipt - yeah, that's really going to Congress honest!

Todd may be deeply ingrained in the ultra-religious "Family" organization but Ti(NO)ahrt hasn't let that affiliation influence him in favor of any pesky Christian attitudes towards the needy. At least not if it goes against the GOP party line.

The sizable crowd included Democrats and Republicans alike who were treated to colorful stories recounted by Miller. Ticket proceeds and sponsorships added over $800 to the RCDem's treasury. Support for these events is vital to a successful election effort come next November.

The public response to these parades seems to grow every year and presents a great opportunity to encourage other Democrats in the area. There are several RCDems who show up faithfully to join in these events but we would like to encourage those who haven't participated in the past to commit to marching with us at least once in 2010. There are vocal disruptive forces who are bent on crushing the Democratic party in Kansas. It's up to each of us to see that our voices are not silenced.

This was our second Last Saturday Breakfast meeting at the Plaza Grill just south of South Hutch with several RCDems in attendance. We will forego meeting in December but the breakfast meetings will resume on January 30th. This is a great opportunity for discussion and sharing of ideas in a private room. APPRECIATION FOR RENO COUNTY DEMOCRATS

When the annual Reno County Democratic Party salute to Veteran's Day was dropped off at the Hutch News the woman at the classified ads remarked "I think it's great that the Democrats do this." We started the tradition four years ago and I'll admit I was never sure if anyone ever noticed but obviously they do. It's just one more seemingly small gesture that has a real impact. So when we have an event; hold a reception; write well thought out letters of support for Democratic principles; appear at a parade - people notice!

GOING AFTER THE WOMEN'S VOTE?

When Sen. Al Franken (Dem., Minnesota)offered an amendment to the Defense Appropriation Bill, he sought to protect employees of contractors hired by the U.S. There had been several instances of sexual harassment and assault of women working for these companies in Iraq. In one horrendous episode a woman was gang-raped, told she would lose her job if she left to receive medical treatment and was banned from any criminal or civil court proceedings under the terms of her employee contract which only allowed private arbitration in cases if this nature.

Franken's proposal would deny the awarding of any U.S. contracts to companies that insisted on this kind of limitations on the legal rights of women who suffered such assaults. The amendment passed with only 30 Senators voting against it - ALL REPUBLICANS - including Kansas' own Pat Roberts and gubenatorial candidate Sam Brownback! I leave it to Kansans to decide if this is the kind of "Christian" leadership we want in Topeka.

Newly announced candidate for 1st District U.S. House Representative, Alan Jilka engaged in a conversation with RCDem Bill Rogers during the Demofest luncheon on Saturday. Governor Mark Parkinson gave an inspiring speech encouraging Democrats to remain positive during the upcoming election. But the most enthusiastic response from the crowd came when current State Representative Raj Goyle from Wichita took the stage. Goyle's efforts in the legislature and his successful unseating of an incumbant have inspired high hopes for his successful bid for the open seat in 4th District, formerly held by Todd Tiahrt.

Later in the day Democrats from Pratt, Reno and McPherson county met with Kenny Johnston to discuss plans to renovate the State Fair Booth. Staffing of the booth and increased cooperation from KDP were among items addressed as needing improvement. There will be further discussion and presentations made at Democrat Washington Days in February of 2010. Watch for more details in coming months and make plans to attend this important event.

T-BAGGERS A NO-SHOW AT DEMOFEST

Despite encouragement from rightwing bloggers, protesters failed to appear at the showing of "What's the Matter With Kansas", a documentary inspired by Thomas Frank's book. A theater filled with Kansas Democrats was welcomed by the Sedgwick County Chair. The film consisted primarily of interviews with conservatives which in retrospect did illustrate the problems facing the state. There was a segment following a family to the Creationist Museum that proved to be unintentionally humorous. More sobering were the revelations of numerous followers of Reverend Terry Fox and the ill-fated affiliation with Wild West World. One couple lost $300,000 to developer Etheridge when the project failed. There are increasing instances across the country of the trusting faithful being fleeced by a few unscrupulous charlatans seeking to take advantage of the "religious right".

RENO COUNTY DEMOCRATS TRY SOMETHING NEW

After taking the summer months off it was back to work for the Democratic Party in Reno County. There were many familiar faces on hand to discuss plans for the future. There will be a meeting with KDP representatives at Demofest in Wichita to discuss improvements for the Kansas State Fair Booth. The prime location and public relations opportunity of this event cannot be ignored. Democrats are encouraged to step up if asked to volunteer their time to staff the booth next year. We will be deep into the election season by then and your efforts are vital to success.

It was reported that Salina native Alan Jilka will definitely be running for Kansas 1st District Representative. Alan's credentials are impressive and he will need our full support as time goes on.

Following a lengthy discussion it was decided that the "LAST WEDNESDAY" meeting will become the "LAST SATURDAY MORNING" meeting. Reno County Democrats are encouraged to gather at the Go Plaza (truck stop just outside of South Hutchinson) for a breakfast meeting at 8:30 AM. This will leave the rest of the day for weekend activities and it is hoped, will allow more to attend. Mark your calendar for Saturday October 31st, 8:30 AM and join us at the Go Plaza for breakfast!

RENO COUNTY DEMOCRATS DIG IN - GET IT DONE

In just a few short hours it was "mission accomplished"! Nine area Democrats showed up with shovels and loppers in hand to fulfill a commitment to perform a community service project. The former Hutch Floral property was acquired by the Kansas Cosmosphere for future expansion. Due to a lack of funds/staff to do regular maintenance the site had become overgrown. Using an ingenious tool James Taylor dispatched a potential forest of volunteer trees. Others went after the weeds that were choking out remaining flower beds, cleaned out grasses growing through concrete patio area and picked up trash scattered across the property. Loaded down pick-ups supplied by the Taylors and Margie Breeze were filled to overflowing with the debris that was taken to the landfill. An independent photojournalist from Wichita stopped to interview and videotape the volunteers at work. If you missed this opportunity there will be other chances to join in future projects.

DEMOCRATS MAKING HEADWAY AT THE FAIR

Contrary to the rather dismal mention in the Wichita Eagle things picked up at the Democratic Booth after a shaky start. There have been some ongoing problems with people not honoring their scheduled commitments but the Reno County Democrats have stepped in to fill the gaps. This points out how important it is to honor those commitments. Pictured above is Jon Powell, a Hutch native that has returned to the fold. Jon's enthusiasm and winning ways with the public will make him a tremendous asset to the party. He is seen here helping a Democrat sign up for the drawing to win an autographed copy of President Obama's book "The Audacity of Hope". A good sized box containing the entry slips was nearing full when I left on Tuesday. Also visible are poster sized sheets with names, two columns wide, of supporters of the public option in health care. Three of these large sheets have been filled with a fourth started late Tuesday.

The difficulties experienced with the lack of materials was brought to the attention of Topeka. After emails and telephone calls it would seem there will be much more input and support from KDP in future years. The positive comments from a surprising number of Democrats who stopped by was encouraging. Even better were the Republicans who signed the petition and voiced their disgust with the recent direction taken by their party. There are many more of these unhappy moderates than people think. So there will be much to accomplish in the months leading up to the next election but if we are willing to stand behind our candidates there could be a whole new ballgame in Kansas.

An email to those Reno County Democrats signed up will be coming out soon but I will mention here that we will be resuming our regular monthly meetings starting Wednesday, September 30, 5:30 at the RCD headquarters in Mark Treaster's Rainbow International building at 1129 W 4th. Betty Taylor will be bringing refreshments so join us there for some important discussions.

POSSIBLE FIRST DISTRICT CONTENDER

Several representatives of the Reno County Democratic Central Committee and a number of former candidates/elected officials met with Alan Jilka recently to discuss his possible run for U.S. Representative in the 1st District. Mr. Jilka, a graduate of Notre Dame, has served on
the Salina City Commission, three years as Mayor of the city where his family owns a furniture business. Fluent in Spanish he has a masters degree in Comparative Literature and has studied in Portugal and Brazil.

Jilka worked for Dan Glickman in Washington D.C. In his conversation he expressed support for renewable energy plans in Kansas and an interest in a viable, active arts community. All who attended were impressed with Jilka's presentation. He received advice from former candidates on campaigning, fund raising and a suggestion that he acquaint himself with the state fair and the opportunities to connect with constituents from across the western part of the state. Currently there are at least 5 Republican contenders for the seat.

It is hoped Jilka is just the first of many capable candidates that Reno County Democrats will be able to support in the upcoming elections of 2010.

What a proud evening for Reno County Democrats! We entertained a large group that came to enjoy an evening of great food and a thought-provoking film. State Treasurer Dennis McKinney addressed the crowd with words of encouragement about the promise of a bright future for our state that is possible with the growth of the renewable energy industry and green technology.Those who doubt the commitment of Democrats in Kansas should have been behind the scenes to see the men and women who donated time and energy, working together to make this event a success.

Some of the proceeds that have been raised from current events have gone to renewing our lease on the headquarters at 1129 West 4th - a large office suite in Mark Treaster's Rainbow International Building. County Chair Vic Moser has proposed that this facility be used for monthly Democratic meetings. There has also been a suggestion that members bring along snacks to share for the evening. In just 14 months we will be going to the polls again in an election that could drastically change the leadership in Kansas. The state cannot afford more of the same but the only way to affect change is for us to increase our efforts to bring about that change. A recent article actually pulled Kansas out of the "reliably red" category into the "states that might be in play" column! It's the willingness to work for that outcome that will make the difference.

I doubt that many have dug too deeply into articles/blogs about the Town Hall meetings that are being circulated. That may be a wise move since being overly informed is taxing the ability of my blood pressure medication to work! As seen in this photo, swastikas are showing up; Limbaugh is freely comparing Obama to Hitler; Palin is spreading the word about Obama's "Death Panel" and seniors across America are warned of their forced extinction if Health Reform is passed. Outrageous as this seems, it's working. Familiar groups such as Americans for Prosperity and faces such as Randal Terry of Operation Rescue fame are blanketing the country with distortion or outright lies about a bill that hasn't even been written. In the meantime the ridiculous charges about Obama's birthplace are thriving and taking up time in our overtaxed judicial system. Overly zealous conservatives are flooding Congress with emails and phone calls aimed at stopping the progress of needed change that was voted for. I don't suggest for a moment that Democrats should resort to these infantile practices but sitting on the sidelines, tsk-tsking at the antics without responding in a reasoned, rational way just can't be an option. We have to muster the courage to stand up for what is right and sensible. Letters, calls, emails of support are an effective response but a simple act such as supporting local Democratic events shouldn't be underestimated. So treat yourself to an evening's entertainment by attending the reception and presentation of the documentary WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR? this Friday, August 14th at the Fox Theatre. The suggested donation of $10 will help the Reno County Democratic Party in it's efforts but more importantly, the act of showing up in support sends a strong, positive message. DEMOCRATS AT HUTCHINSON EMANCIPATION DAY PARADE

There was a great turnout of "blue shirts" to honor the Centennial of the NAACP last Saturday.

Special recognition was given to longtime (42 years) president of the local chapter, Darrell Pope. We caught him as the parade was lining up and persuaded him to pose with his larger than life poster. Kam and Randy McEwen took off time from celebrating their 25th anniversary to drive their new Prius hybrid in the parade. They took advantage of Obama's CARS program to help the environment as well as the local economy. Checking out the conservative conversations it's evident that the success of this effort is gauling to them as there is nothing but sniping and critisim of the program despite its effectiveness. More of the GOP culture of NO-NO-NO!

Just a side note on the "C STREET HOUSE" issue. I'm sure there are those who would defend the Family/Fellowship program. Our Kansas officials declaring it just a helpful religious group that they had no real connection to...this brings to mind the furor over Rev. Wright during Obama's campaign. Funny how those affiliations are twisted to suit the needs of the parties involved. The issue should be fully explored as the next election gets underway!

PBS BILL MOYERS AND RANT RADIO

If you have access to pod casts or go to the transcripts on the PBS site you might be interested in listening to the second half of Bill Moyers Journal from Friday, July 24. It is a chilling piece on the growth of hate speech in the conservative radio, television and print media. Anyone who refuses to make the connections between violence and pressure on Congress to follow their doctrines is not facing reality. Many wonder why I try to catch the radio broadcasts but on Monday I tuned in to see if there was a response to Moyers' comments. As expected Limbaugh played PARTIAL soundbites of Moyers
commentary on the Fairness Doctrine. Moyers spoke of its history, when it was repealed under the Reagan administration and that the ranters are now sqealing about its possible resurrection and how that would adversely affect them. Limbaugh first suggested that Moyers was just envious of the money he makes and then launched into a tirade about main stream media having "it all their way" under the Fairness Doctrine. This of course makes no sense as FD granted access to opposing views - something we have now lost. More important though was the impression left by Rush that Moyers was supporting the Fairness Doctrine. Exactly the opposite is true. Moyers was clear in stating that he was AGAINST the repeal; that there should be no limits or restrictions put on broadcasters. By not playing the whole quote, Limbaugh gave exactly the opposite impression of Moyers' point. So his throngs of fans will go forth spewing more half-truths as fact. That's precisely why I make myself pay attention occassionally. I want to know how they operate and why there is so much MISINFORMATION accepted as truth. Forewarned is forearmed! or Know the truth and the truth will set you free.

MEA CULPA!!!!!Won't even bother with a litany of excuses. Get busy with the day to day; set priorities; "doing" instead of "writing" and suddenly - WHOOSH - four months have passed without posting about what's going on. So I'll start with this week and work backwards in hopes that "true believers" will have the inclination and time to wend their way through the entire post.

JULY 24 - GREAT RESPONSE TO RENO COUNTY DEMOCRATIC EVENT

Democrats from Rice, McPherson and Reno County gathered for an evening of sharing and building commitment. Potential US Senate candidate Charles Schollenberber addressed the group laying out his platform. Lyn Reynolds was the winner of a drawing for a hand crafted quilt titled "Dancing Donkeys". There was a lot of talk about the revelations of current Kansas legislators Todd Tiahrt and Sam Brownback's affiliation with a shadowy D.C. organization, The Fellowship. Checking out internet sources reveals some interesting and disturbing information about the group. Might make their future campaigns a little dicey. Watch for more events coming soon.

JULY 4 - STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER AT PATRIOT PARADE

Reno County Democrats turned out in force to celebrate our Nation's birthday. The most touching moment came when a quite elderly couple watching the parade from their chairs, stood as the RCD entry passed - she covering her heart, he standing tall and saluting. The cheers and applause as we marched demonstrated the importance of these appearances.

JUNE 9 - DEMOCRATIC WOMENS CLUB DOUBLES UP ON SCHOLARSHIPS

HHS Young Democrats Adam Miklos and Chris Givens made the choice impossible. Both with exemplary scholastic achievement and commitment to Democratic Party efforts were awarded $500 scholarships thanks to the Reno County Democratic Women and generous supplemental donations from additional Democrats. We wish these young men well as they continue to pursue their academic careers.

The gathering of around 300 sent the message loud and clear at a Clean Energy Rally in Topeka.

Representatives from a variety of groups rallied in favor of renewable energy sources that would both protect the environment and enhance economic opportunities in Kansas. Among the supporters was RCDem Curt Miller, mayor of Pretty Prairie and member of the Reno County Wind Energy Task Force. Following the rally Miller, Kathie Moore, Dorothy Burnett and her two daughters visited District 101 Representative Seiwert at his office to discuss the advantages of wind energy over coal-fired plants.

RENO COUNTY DEMOCRATS HELP OUT AT KPTS

RCDems, Young Democrats and friends spent Monday evening March 16th on the phones for pledge breaks during a documentary featuring the landmark 1958 Dockum Street sit-in in Wichita. A favorite viewing choice of many RCDems, KPTS features information and viewpoints not readily available from other sources. This PBS affiliate has produced a number of quality pieces covering people and events of interest to Kansans along with programs such as Ask Your Legislator and Kansas Week which keep viewers up to date and in touch with happenings in Topeka. Speaking for myself I would encourage everyone to make a pledge to support this valuable source of information and entertainment.

DEMOCRATS COMING ON STRONG

I went to Washington Days in Topeka (February 27-28) thinking the mood might not be the brightest. To my surprise I found energized, hopeful Democrats from across Kansas ready to move ahead. The Friday night banquet marked what turned out to be Governor Sebelius' last appearance at this annual event as our state's leader. Though the official announcement was not made, the guest speaker, Governor Brian Schweitzer of Montana, hinted at what was to come when he spoke of the sacrifices that must be made in support of the Obama administration's plans . An incredible oil portrait of President Obama was auctioned off raising over $4,000 for the state party. Governor Sebelius was confident that an autographed certificate from Obama would also be made available to the winning bidder. Schwietzer's bolo tie also went on the auction block bringing a winning bid of several thousand.

Legislators were encouraged by the failure of the House of Representatives to muster a veto-proof number of votes in support of the Holcumb coal-fired plants. The battle is far from over but legislators with an eye to future economic development and energy independence are standing strong. The Reno County Wind Energy Task Force will be meeting at the Hutchinson Library on Tuesday, March 10 in the evening to discuss support and progress in bringing wind to our county. New supporters are welcome to become involved in this critical endeavor.

The HHS Young Democrats were a big hit at the event. Elected officials and members of various caucus met with them. Supporters contributed generously to their cause when they set up a display on Saturday. The support and efforts of their sponsor Kam McEwen with help from husband Randy is much appreciated. There is talk of a new goal of attending the national convention for Young Democrats in Chicago. Work is underway to help establish a chapter of the organization at Hutch JuCo in the near future. This is really what it's all about - the future. We will have much to do in the upcoming elections in 2010. Make sure you're part of the effort to support Democrats in Kansas.

FUTURE OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY

If you ever get discouraged with Kansas politics I suggest you revisit this blog entry. There has been a great amount of good publicity from Hutch News generated by the Hutch High Young Democrats. They were featured in a story when they organized a mock election at the high school. There was coverage of their legislator's visit when they were seeking funds for their trip to the inauguration. There was terrific coverage of that trip when they returned.

If all that is not enough, check out the crowd at the February Reno County Democratic Womens Club meeting. This was the best attendence ever for on of these events. There has been contact from an instructor at HCC wanting to set up a similar club. With plans to attend HCC in the fall, some of the HHS Young Dems should be helpful in accomplishing that goal.

When I attended a recent gathering of retired federal employees (NARFE) I saw a number of familiar RCD faces. Mayor Trish Rose sponsors regular meetings for Hutchinson residents where again, you can see several Democrats. Same for the audiences at the legislative forums that were held in January and February. And if that's not enough, the meetings of the Reno County Wind Energy Task Force members include quite a few RCDems. The point being we are an active, integral part of the Kansas landscape. Perhaps our greatest challenge remains bringing those of a like mind into the fold.

It is understandable that Democrats can become discouraged after the results on the state level following the last election but it is obvious to me that the perception of the GOP being the "only party in town" is more in our minds than in reality. It's just a matter of reaching out and welcoming GOP moderates, independents and "bashful" Democrats. We've made a lot of progress over the past few years. Now it's time to build on that success and make a difference.

NEW YEAR - NEW CHALLENGES

Lest you think the need for involvement is over with the end of the 2008 elections, pick up your newspaper, turn on the radio/TV or surf the internet to see what challenges are facing us. The aircraft industry is experiencing declines; environmental threats from coal fired plants still loom and yes, there are coal ash storage ponds in Kansas! Budget cuts are a sure thing.

Legislators, both state and federal will be making decisions that will have long term impact on us all. You can be assured that rant radio is out there firing up the faithful to blitz lawmakers with their views and preferences and these listeners do take action and make waves. Common sense and the proper course of action can be overwhelmed by a flood of messages from right-wing activists. So unless you want you future determined by Dittoheads, do your part to make YOUR thoughts and wishes known.

There will be several opportunities to be involved and informed in the next few weeks: the Democratic Womens's Club is meeting at noon, Tuesday January 13th at the Airport Steakhouse. The speaker is Heidi Unruh who has hosted several gatherings to encourage input from Democrats as to actions they can take to influence decisions that will affect us all.
The Big 1st District reorganization meeting will be held in Hutchinson, Saturday January 17th at the Grand Prairie Hotel from 10:30 to 4 PM. The $15 registration fee includes lunch.
Reno County Democrats will resume the Last Wednesday Meetings on Wednesday January 28 at the Great Wall/Mongolian Buffet from 5:30 to 7 PM. Bottom line: you can particpate and take action or sit back and wish someone had spoken out on your behalf. Unforturnately, one voice speaking the truth and offering the right solutions can be drowned out by distortion and wrong ideas if they are in the majority. It's not right but it's the way the world works!

YOUNG DEMOCRATS TO HIT THE ROAD TO D.C.

They've been there to help since the group formed in '07. They made and sold buttons like crazy along with the other assistance they gave during the campaigns across Reno County. Now the Young Democrats are fulfilling a dream that started back in January last year when many attended the Obama rally in El Dorado. Several members along with sponsor Kam McEwen and her husband Randy will be making the trek to our nations capital to be party to the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

The tickets were purchased with proceeds from button sales but they will be sightseeing at several attractions while in D.C. Meals, transportation and incidentals may be pricey especially at a high tourist traffic time so they are asking our help. There will be a fund raising event held Wednesday, January 7 at the Metro Cafe at 17th and Lorraine from 6 to 8 p.m. Several area legislators have accepted an invitation to meet with attendees. There will be a special Obama Inauguration Watch Party Basket filled with goodies raffled off that night. It would be terrific if there were a big turnout to wish them well and possibly donate a dollar or so to their travel fund.

OBAMA HEALTH CARE MEETING WELL ATTENDED

Drove into town thinking I might see a few familiar RCDem faces at the meeting that was announced in the Hutch News. The moderator, Bunny Czarnopys applied to the transition team for a position and was accepted. I later found out she is acquainted with Trish Rose and Kam McEwen. Yes, there were several in the crowd I recognized, but most encouraging is that there was a CROWD! It was obvious from overheard comments that there were representatives of a broad spectrum of the political arena. Still there was actually a lot of concensus as to problems and even a few solutions.

It's my hope that there will be even more of these town hall forums in time to come. This is what we voted for; it's what we need and it appears it may be what Obama's administration is going to deliver. The election may be over but the work has just begun and we should be willing to stay committed to the change we all supported.

Just wanted to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Oh wait - I forgot! Liberals only say "Happy Holidays" being the secular lowlifes we are. Is anyone else as amazed as I am at what experts the likes of Limbaugh, O'Reilly (et. al.) are when it comes to how you think, what you believe and what you support? Unfortunately those who are immersed in that kind of right wing "rot" believe every word. Truth is there is a huge diversity of opinion and positions in the Democratic Party. This is in large part why I became and remain such a supporter of our President-elect Barack Obama. He raised the ire of the Right by recruiting many of the talented and experienced associates of the Clinton administration. Now he has also aggravated some on the Left with his choice of Rick Warren to participate in his inauguration. As I used to tell my husband, since each of our children accused us equally of playing favorites with the other two, we must be doing a good job!

Speaking of good jobs: our Young Democrats under the guidance of sponsor Kam McEwen, were successful in their efforts to raise money with the sale of their campaign buttons. Several of them are now making plans to attend the Inauguration in January. They are planning a fund raising project the first week of the new year in an effort to raise the balance of their anticipated expenses. More information will be released soon so consider making a donation or providing a sponsorship on their behalf. They are the future of the Democratic Party and with their drive and enthusiasm we could see big changes in the political climate of Kansas.

Heidi Unruh held another meeting at her home to gather suggestions for projects and goals. There were many great ideas that came out of the gathering regarding job creation, environmental concerns and the economy of Kansas. There will be additional information released soon as to how we can bring these ideas to community leaders. Plan to become involved in future efforts to make these ideas a reality.

Inspired by gains on the national scene, despite the disappointments in Kansas, Reno County Democrats refuse to give up the struggle to offer something besides "politics as usual" to the state. In fact there is an increasing interest being expressed from surrounding counties to build membership and work together. Some ideals are just too important to abandon.

Response from the crowds during the Christmas parade in Hutch, bolster hope for the future and belief that we are making a difference. Working off the parade theme of "Rockin' Kansas Christmas" we altered it to "Ba-Rockin' Kansas...", with a tree decorated with multi-colored photos of our President-elect that brought cheers and applause as we passed by. Mayor Trish Rose along with her "yellow dog Democrat" labrador named Rocco was a hit with the crowd. Perhaps most encouraging was the help of former primary candidate Kevin Branscom and the invaluable assistance of State Senatorial candidate Dave Inskeep. It takes courage and dedication to carry on after a defeat. The best appreciation we can show our candidates is to continue our support and match their involvement in times to come.

High on my list of things to be thankful for are all those who contribute their time, effort and spirit to the Democratic Party. My best to you all during the holiday season.

TEARS OF JOY-TEARS OF SORROW

It would have been appropriate to write immediately following the election of Barack Obama. The depth of pride and hope I felt towards American voters that night was a surprise to me. The bitterness I felt towards Kansas for depriving me of the priviledge of contributing to his victory also surprised me. The disappointment that enveloped me at the losses by our Reno County Democratic candidates was deeper than I could have imagined. In short, I was a "basket case" for the entire day. Couldn't even muster the will to get dressed, instead schlepping around in PJs, screening calls so that I wouldn't have to pretend to be all right. A deep metaphysical "funk" settled over me.

Closing down the headquarters on Thursday I was reminded of the many who had worked so hard supporting our candidates over the last few months. I recalled the Grand Opening, the debate watches, the rally, parades and receptions. I thought of all the volunteers, the reliable long time helpers and the many new faces that appeared to buy a button or yard sign or just to express their hopes for Democratic successes.

Slowly the thoughts became more upbeat - what we did right; where we could do better; how to proceed; all the new contacts we had made...

So now I'm ready to take up the cause again. This isn't the time for regrets; it's time to start planning for the future. I believe all the old friends and all the new acquaintences are up to the challenge. We've come too far and accomplished too much to quit now, so make plans to attend the next meeting Wednesday November 19th, 5:30 at the Great Wall/Mongolian Buffet at 1528 E 17th and keep watching for new additions to the blog and the latest email newsletter.

Just checked the most recent polling for Kansas. Less than a week old it shows a 13 point gap. This means if there was a movement of just 7 points KANSAS would go for Obama. Want to see it happen? Want to see Democrats take over from the GOP domination in Reno County? We need to reach voters, make sure they go to the polls. There has been an unprecedented number of new Democratic registrations in Reno County. Now it's up to us to get them out to vote.

I realize it's almost too much to believe after years of unopposed races or worthy candidates that couldn't break through that big red wall. This year we have to think and act like winners if it is going to happen.

Bring your cell phones - put on your walking shoes and come to the headquarters at 1129 W 4th this Saturday November 1 starting at 10:00 AM. If we give it our best and a race is still lost we know we have made progress and will work a little harder next time. If we sit back and defeat ourselves we will have done the job for the opposition ourselves.

You've heard the negativity. You realize what the correct path for the country is. Moderate Republicans are reaching out, willing to support the Democratic slate. Will you do any less?

Following another appearance by the Reno County Democrats at the Partridge parade on Saturday where we were surprised by cheers and applause, Vicki Henke and yours truly stationed ourselves at the parking lot of Grays Barber Shop at E and Main. We hoped to catch some unregistered voters and were successful. If Obama carries Reno County/Kansas by a margin of 4-6 votes we will happily take credit for the win! We spoke to many others through the afternoon who were already registered and happy to share their plans to support Obama. Our thanks to Richard Gray who allowed us to "harrass" his customers who stopped by. His willingness to help will be a great asset in future elections as well. Appreciate the help of Theda Woodson and Darrell Pope who suggested enlisting his help.

Young Democrats raised a lot with their button sales and had a great time.
The response by the public was better than hoped for. Lots of fun. Lots of happy Democrats.

If Democrats don't do well in November it won't be for lack of enthusiasm. There was live music, lots of laughter and cheers throughout the evening at our Obama-Biden Rally. Jim French and John Eberly did an outstanding job of entertaining everyone with their music. There are so many to thank for the success. Kam McEwen has worked tirelessly with the Young Democrats who were on hand to help. Democratic Women's Club President Ellen Neufeld and Treasurer Judy Langley kept on top of the details preparing for the event. Cheri Moser and Betty Taylor made sure there were plenty of treats available as the evening wore on. Ken Jorns entertained the crowd as emcee as he quoted our president "W" making everyone appreciate what a welcome change Obama will be! Nancy and Pat Clark provided a video camera to save many of the highlights of the event. Hope to share the great interview segment by Nancy and Bill Rogers as they canvassed the crowd asking folks "Why are you a Democrat?" at a meeting soon.

Do have a couple of requests. Judy Langley shared six large Obama rally posters that were hung at the entry to the building. Somehow there was a misunderstanding and the posters were gone at evening's end. We would really appreciate the return of them to Judy as they were her personal souvenirs. Also in the hustle of clean up a digital SD card in a small plastic holder got lost in the shuffle from the photo table. Please check to see if it was mistakenly gathered up with items by mistake. There are images from the National Guard homecoming and of our guest speaker Heidi Unruh that I would hate to lose.

Again MANY MANY thanks to all who helped to make the event so special. We need to get down to work now with walking and calling to make the election equally successful.

We're coming down to crunch time. Across the country polls are swinging in Obama's favor and "by golly", McCain's campaign has unleashed a Limbaugh avatar in the guise of Sarah Palin. "There they go again" with smears and outright lies when "gosh darn it", policies and suitability for the office just aren't "cuttin' it" anymore. It's becoming clear that every vote is vital. States that were once solidly "red" are lining up or leaning, "blue". Kansas remains crimson at this point but when one takes into consideration the huge numbers of re-registered Republicans, the unaffiliated, previously unregistered and young voters who are often not canvassed in polls, this could be THE YEAR!

People are asking "what can I do?". So here are some tips that can make the difference:

Apply for an advance ballot NOW. Applications are available at Democratic HQ or at the courthouse. The ballot will be sent by mail and may be returned up until polls close on election day however the SOONER the BETTER to get that vote in. Encourage friends and neighbors to use this method as well.
Even better; starting October 22 through November 3 you can cast your early vote at the courthouse from 8 AM to 5 PM. On October 30 only the courthouse will open for voting until 7 PM.
ADDITIONAL EARLY VOTING PLACES: October 24 from 9 AM to 6 PM at the Hutchinson Community College student union Blue Dragon Room. Weekends (Sat. & Sun.) at the Hutchinson Mall - Oct 25, 10 - 6; Oct 26, 12 - 4; Oct 31, 10 - 4; Nov 1, 10 - 6.

Fear I've fallen behind in posting new entries. It seems the election season is in full swing and things are busier than ever in the office. 22 large highway signs for Slattery have gone out across the area - Barton, Rice, McPherson, Pawnee and of course, Reno County are all making their support for a change in the senate.

Obama bumper stickers have flown out so we're trying to get a few more. Kam McEwen and the Young Democrats are working overtime to keep us supplied with campaign buttons so we have a good supply again. In high demand are buttons with photos so get yours while they're still available. In six days we will be able to put up yard signs. So far our supply is holding up but they are being picked up steadily with about 20 going out just last week.

A group of 15 showed up for last Friday's Debate Watch so we're going ahead with another for the VP debates. As long as there's interest we'll continue to open the office for these events. Further evidence of the growing interest in Reno County Democrats was the call we received from the Hutch News inquiring about the debate. They followed up by sending a reporter down to take photos and then published some of the remarks. If you saw the article Saturday you might have noticed there were no responces from local Republicans. Evidently they had no organized events. As if to reinforce my observations of a surge in interest there were new faces at the debate watch, several never before seen Democrats came by the office to talk and pick up items and I received an email from a couple that moved here from Michigan a few months ago wanting to get acquainted with RCDems. I love the familiar faces and friends but it's those who are showing up for the first time that signal the success of our efforts.

We'll soon be starting door to door and telephone canvassing to contact and encourage early voting. There is a new automated connection system for phoning that has been set up by the state party that will make it very easy to accomplish from your home phone. We'll be getting additional information out so if you're interested in helping with this vital effort give me a call and I'll add your name to the list.

The presidential rally planned for October 16, 7 PM at the Salvation Army at 700 N Walnut is going to be one of the best events we've ever had. Live music, refreshments, speakers and a lot of new features will entertain and enthuse all who attend. RCDems are doing a great job and are to be congratulated but we can always use more help. This one is too important too set out!

TIME IS FLYING!

Things are happening at a dizzying pace. We are hearing more and more that calls into question the wisdom of Sen. McCain's choice of a running mate. The smear ads from his campaign are everywhere and it has been reported that the same group that provided the "Swift Boat" ads of the 2004 election season are making ready to attack Senator Obama with more distortions and lies. With only seven weeks left until election day it's up to those of us on the grass roots level to get the truth out.

At the campaign headquarters the Obama yard signs and buttons are a popular item. We've had Democrats from Rice, Barton and Reno county in the office to pick up these items regularly. While this is encouraging, what is missing is Letters to the Editor/Western Front. These messages are important as they indicate to the public the level of support for Barack Obama's candidacy. Please consider adding your voice to the mix. The most effective letters are those that give simple, honest endorcements. If you wish, it may be helpful to briefly state why you are in favor of electing Senator Obama. We don't want to resort to the negativity of McCain's tactics but positive support can be effective. Talk to friends and acquaintances about the election too. The tragedy would be if we wake up on November 5th to discover a continuation of the last eight years because we didn't make the effort to get involved.

Watch for postings of photos from the fair, fundraisers and other recent events in the next few days. We're planning on opening the office on the nights of the presidential and vice-presidential debates. OFF TO A GREAT START

It took three television sets, trays of baked goods, MANY scoops of ice cream and the help of some of the most dedicated Reno County Democrats and in the end it was an evening to remember. RCDemocrats hosted nearly 100 people at the Grand Opening of campaign headquarters Thursday night. Commissioner Garcia, Mayor Rose, NAACP President Pope were among the guests. All of our area candidates were there as well and had the chance to address potential supporters. The Linda, wife of Senate hopeful James Slattery dropped in and was astounded at the large turnout. James Bordonaro, running against Representative Moran was among one of the first to arrive and stayed throughout the evening. The enthusiasm for Obama's speech in the large viewing room was inspiring. A crowd of all ages, men and women alike applauded frequently as they watched the huge crowds gathered to encourage our presidential candidate.

We're hoping for as enthusiastic a crowd for the Presidential Rally to be held Thursday October 16 at the Salvation Army Facility starting at 7 PM. There will be refreshments, speakers, entertainment and maybe a few surprises in store.

Campaign literature and signs are starting to arrive at the office. We are suggesting a donation of $5 for the Obama signs but all others are free. Donations are always appreciated to help cover operating expenses. We now have a phone number for the office: 200-0279.

Want to remind everyone to come to the State Fair to support James Slattery at his debate with Pat Roberts, Saturday September 6 at 10 AM. Roberts is reported to be busing in supporters so we need to show our support in HUGE numbers. The Slattery campaign has put out an appeal for volunteers to staff his booth at the fair as well. CENTRAL COMMITTEE MEETS AT NEW FACILITY

All Reno County Democrat officers and a substantial number of committee men and women showed up for this required reorganizational meeting. While there were additional nominees for some posts our roster of officers will remain the same: Vic Moser, County Chair; Judy Langley, Vice-Chair; Trish Rose, Secretary; Kam McEwen, Treasurer. Patrick Clark made an appeal for additional precinct/township committee persons to fill vacancies. Bill Rogers reported on progress with the upcoming GRAND OPENING festivities for August 28. The office opening, viewing party and ice cream social combined event will be held from 7:00 ro 10:30 PM. Obama's speech is scheduled for 9:00 CDT to be viewed on a large screen TV. A request was put out for baked goods to accompany the ice cream being offered that evening. In response to Bill's report of the ongoing need for additional funds for events, campaign HQ and candidate support , several in attendance made generous pledges. Donations in any amount are appreciated and will help provide a healthy presense of the Democratic Party in Reno County.

POLITICAL SIGN "ETIQUETTE" (IT'S THE LAW)

You see them everywhere and yes, they really can have an impact, especially for candidates trying to establish name recognition. Here are some tips and regulations that must be observed. While these are specific to Hutchinson, area towns and Reno County regs are similar. If in doubt, check with the county court house or city offices in your area. These items cost the candidates and signs have been "confiscated" for non-compliance.

Signs are allowed not more than 30 days before election and should be removed within 7 days following election
Consent must be obtained if not your property
In residential areas, sign must not exceed 6 square feet. In other areas must not exceed 32 square feet
Sign must be free standing, not attached to other structures
Signs must NOT be placed in public right-of-way, usually meaning not between street and sidewalk
If sign creates "hazard" it may be removed by city
Though removal is the usual course of action for failure to observe the restrictions, there could be fines or penalties

Due to the large celebration planned for Thursday August 28th at the new Campaign Headquarters for the Reno County Democrats, there will be no Last Wednesday meeting for August on Wednesday the 27th. This event will include the annual Ice Cream Social festivities. There will be a large screen TV so we can watch Senator Barack Obama's acceptance speech broadcast from the National Convention in Denver. Local candidates will be on hand. New faces showing up, familiar faces returning and plenty of activities planned for August. That sums up the July Last Wednesday Meeting. Several of the participants involved in the Obama- Democratic Platform gathering came to introduce themselves at the meeting. Organizer Heidi Unruh brought her family and made a presentation about the results of the discussions. Hutchinson Mayor Trish Rose stopped by as well as many of the Democratic candidates. Dave Inskeep(KS State Senate), Barbara Alexander(Register of Deeds), Ken Jorns(County Commission, District 2) and Tom Litchfield(County Commission, District 3) addressed the group briefly. Dave Inskeep announced several upcoming campaign events: a coffee and door to door walk in Buhler on August 9th and a fundraiser at Anchor Inn on August 21. Any candidate planning an event is welcome to submit particulars which will be mentioned both here and listed in greater detail on the RCD website (http://klmnews45.googlepages.com/) on the events page.

Fundraising committee Chair Bill Rogers announced plans for the annual RCDemocrats 2nd annual ice cream social. This is one you won't want to miss as there may be some special surprises in store. Watch for information in a newsletter coming out soon.

County Chair Vic Moser also revealed the date for the Grand Opening of the Reno County Democratic Headquarters on Thursday, August 28. OBAMA SUPPORTERS DISCUSS PLATFORM

In response to a nationwide effort by the Obama campaign to collect opinions and comments
regarding the Democratic National Platform, supporters were encouraged to gather for discussions and feedback. Heide Unruh opened her home to interested Democrats. There was a lively discussion of a variety of issues but dominated by thoughts on reproductive rights. Positions ran from total rejection of abortions to support for a woman's right to choose. The one area of agreement was that the issue is used against all Democrats regardless of their individual stance. There was an overwhelming consensus on most vital planks; environment, health care, social security, campaign finance reform, etc. Perhaps most encouraging was to see many new involved Democrats. At the end of the meeting the photo was taken of some of those who attended.

PUBLIC RESPONDS TO CANDIDATE FORUM

There were many familiar faces to be seen. County Chair Vic Moser is pictured talking to Treasure Kam McEwen while active local Democrat Jade Piros, who served as timekeeper for the event looks on. The support for our RCD candidates was obvious as the evening progressed.

The audience was engaged and eager to hear the responses from the participating candidates, a group just about evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats. There were three instances of particular note. One was when a Rep. candidate expressed the wish that discussions of vehicles for the sheriff's department should have been held behind closed doors. Dem. Kevin Branscom was quick to counter that when matters of the public's tax money were in question, it should never be behind closed doors. The second incident was when a question was directed to Dave Inskeep's opponent. The current Senator was asked about his professional affiliation as attorney for a rural electric co-op, known to be supportive of the Holcomb plant proposal and whether or not it constituted a conflict of interest. While he did offer a credible reponse that it did not qualify as a conflict, his remark before he answered was that it was a "nosey" question. It seemed to this observer that a pattern could be seen in these two responses. The final noteworthy response came from Dem. State Representative Mark Treaster who declared that he would not back down from a position that he believed was the correct one. These are clear indications of the integrity or lack of the same we can expect. Maybe the best example of why your support and willingness to engage in the elections is so vital.

Two quick reminders: there is an event planned for Sunday evening to discuss input to the Democratic Party's platform sponsored by the campaign of Barack Obama that was reported in the Hutchinson News. I tried to make contact with the individual but with no success. The information given was that the event will begin at 6 pm at the home of Heidi Unruh, 1710 E 2nd.

The annual Emancipation Day Parade will be Saturday August 2 starting at 10 am. This parade runs from North to South Main street and is followed by many activities. Again we are making the effort to have a presence. More information will be sent out by RCD email newsletter and posted on the website. Try to be there.

Thanks to Mark Treaster of Rainbow International, the 2008 Reno County Campaign Headquarters will be opening at a future date to be announced following the primary election in August. Entry to the separate suite will be made through the main business office at 1129 West 4th in Hutchinson, across from the farmers co-op. The suite includes a large main office with an adjacent room for storage or small meetings. As you can see in the pictures above, the office is in need of equipment and furnishings so an appeal is being made to party members. We could use a sofa or comfortable side chairs, shelving units, lamps, tables. It would be a tremendous help if someone would care to donate a computer, monitor and/or printer. There have already been donations of a combination TV/VCR and DVD player to view campaign materials or relevant videos. Signs for State Senate candidate Dave Inskeep are now available at the Union Labor Temple at 5th and Main in Hutchinson - contact Bill Rogers shagbill@msn.com. We'd like to meet the goal of 200 of these signs posted throughout Reno County.

County Chair Vic Moser has put out a plea for individuals willing to fill vacant positions on the August 5th Primary Election Boards. There is an unusually high number of vacancies for this election. The wages run from over $8 per hour plus mileage to over $6 per hour depending on the position. Poll hours will be from 7:00 am to 7:00pm with the actual work day probably running from 6 to 8:30. Training sessions will be held July 29, 30, 31 at the fairgrounds from 10:00 am to noon. Supervisors will have a little longer session running from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on July 30 and 31.
You must be a registered voter in Reno County, at least 18 by General Election on November 4. You may be assigned to a precinct/township other than where you vote. This is an opportunity for Reno County Democrats to earn a little extra income and become more involved in the polictical process while ensuring the election process is conducted fairly.

"NOTHING TO FEAR, BUT..."

Felt compelled to comment on the climate of unease that pervades these days. Financial gurus are all over the airwaves, pleading for cool heads in the face of bank failures, stock market decline and mortgage crisis. I couldn't agree more that facts, not fear, should be guiding the country through difficult times. The irony is to watch representatives and "friends" of the administration scrambling to reassure us that it's not that bad or all in our minds. I remember during the 2004 campaign I thought John Kerry had finally hit the right note when he declared he wanted to be the candidate of "hope, not fear". A recurring theme of the Bush administration has been to promote fear; the Axis of Evil, the Mushroom Cloud, gay marriage that would undermine the social fabric of America, the color coded Threat Alerts (Keep your duct tape close at hand!) etc. - all aimed at keeping Americans in line, on board and uncritical. You can't have it both ways Washington; prey on people's fears and then expect calm and rational thought to prevail when it suits your needs. It is unsettling to hear reports of a run on a major bank or the impending failure of corporations held to be invincible giants of the economy. America has weathered many threats in the past and I am confident that eventually things will stabilize. Truth is this could be a golden opportunity if we have the good sense to take advantage of it. This is the time to grab our elected leaders by the scruff of the neck, demand they act responsibly, forget about partisan posturing and do what needs to be done to secure the future of our country: develop a sound energy plan; exercise prudent oversight where it is needed; use restraint and common sense in fiscal matters. The one valid fear is that we might fail to hold our leaders accountable for the mess they have made of things.

I've met several people lately who have remarked on the staggering amount of the widely publicized contract granted THE BIG DITTOHEAD, Rush of Rant Radio fame. Broken down over the 8 year duration it comes to $50 million per year. I hear pornography, gambling and dealing drugs also pay very well. What a shame that those spreading discord and distorted truths are held in such high financial regard.

Speaking of distorted truth, the ridiculous rumors surrounding Barak Obama's religion continue to circulate. So once more: He is a Christian. He took the oath of office on a family Bible. I was appalled in 2000 by the whispered rumor campaigns that were launched against John McCain when he was running against W and the smear tactics used to Swift Boat John Kerry in 2004. There seems to be a pattern here as to where the sleaze and lies originate. Makes me proud to be a Democrat.

And speaking of pride...each time the Democrats show up for an area parade; when there is a Democratic sponsored event such as the reception at the Fox Theatre or the President's Day Chili/Soup supper; at every town hall meeting, Democratic Women's Club lunch or Last Wednesday gathering, where you will almost always find a state legislator, county commissioner, area mayor or candidate willing to answer your questions or listen to your concerns - I am reminded of what a privilege it is to be affiliated with this party. Ask anyone you know from the GOP of Reno County and see if they can report the same kind of community involvement or accessibility to their chosen leaders.

As someone who has been in almost every parade in the last 4 years it has been fascinating to watch the change in reaction from the crowd. The first attempt brought some jeers and a few discreet "thumbs up". In following parades there were occasional "Yea Democrats" shouted from the crowd. This last Friday there were spontaneous bursts of applause as the lead group carrying the RCD banner passed by. There were about 17 walkers in this first group, with more behind with our float. If you count all the vehicles (Mark Treaster, Barbara Alexander, David Inskeep and Kevin Branscom as well as the van covered with stuffed animals and Democratic candidates signs) and all the walkers with them we had over 30 participants representing RCDems. Well done and many thanks to all who came. To everyone else: there will be more opportunities to join in as the year progresses.

There will be a candidate forum later this month. Details will be posted as soon as I get them. The candidates will need your support at these events. It's a great way to become an even better informed voter. Hope everyone read through the articles in Sunday's Hutch News. There were profiles of all candidates along with Q&A. REGISTRATION DEADLINE

Noticed in today's paper that the deadline to register to vote in the August 5th primary is only 3 weeks away. We have choices this year, Democrats! If you are not yet registered or wish to change party affiliation you can register at the Reno County Courthouse or at city offices in all towns in Reno county. In Hutchinson you can also sign up at the driver's license bureau at the mall and at the public library. Reno County Democrats will provide you with the voter registration form as well. Hope to see many supporters and "thumbs up" at the 4th of July parade this Friday morning at 10:00. Our entry will include several candidates, marchers distributing candy and a float. Logistical problems had kept us from including a float for the last few parades but thanks to the generosity of KS State Senate candidate Dave Inskeep we're good to go.

Heard on rant radio last week, criticism of Barack Obama's efforts to stop smoking. Something to the effect (I paraphrase) "How can he have the resolve and character to lead a country if he can't even give up smoking!" Well let me tell you from experience, it takes a lot of fortitude to be a smoker in today's world. I'm being facetious of course. I admire his efforts. Maybe he could get some pointers from Laura Bush - a former smoker. There is no end to the silliness that passes for political commentary these days.

TWO NEW CANDIDATES ATTEND

YOUNG DEMOCRATS SPORT THEIR NEW T-SHIRTS LAST MONTH'S MEETING

There was a good sized crowd at last night's meeting. Tom Litchfield, running for Larry Sharp's County Commission position and Karl Smith, yet another contender for "Shep's" open County Commission seat, introduced themselves to the group. I'm certain we'll be hearing more from them as the primary election nears.

Several members of the Young Democrats were in attendance as well. President Caitlin Doornbos reported the group had attended the Salty Dog Festival and helped Dave Inskeep with his booth. In appeciation for their work following a"door to door" campaign next weekend, the Inskeeps have invited YD helpers to a barbeque and pool party. This kind of cooperation and support will help increase the likelihood of success in November.

Representative Mark Treaster announced that if all proceeds as expected he will be able to provide RCDems with office space for campaign headquarters in the new location for his Rainbow International business. Watch for more information on this subject to be coming out soon.

MEET THE CANDIDATES

This will be the first of a series to introduce you to Democratic candidates for the upcoming election. Meet Barbara Anderson, running for Register of Deeds. There has been an ongoing effort to find candidates to run for positions at the courthouse. A newcomer to RCDems, Barbara has been actively campaigning. She greeted many people at the Cinco de Mayo booth, has attended Last Wednesday Meetings and as shown here joined in the Saltfest Parade. Barbara has indicated she will be joining in the 4th of July efforts as well. You'll be seeing more of her in the months to come as we offer forums and events to acquaint voters with their candidates.

I have received several emails regarding the site address for this blog published in the most recent RCD newletter. At this point it was given as information to enter in a search not as a direct link. Efforts will be made to establish this link if possible. Our blogspot address has been submitted for inclusion to the KDP website as well. In the meantime tell your friends and interested parties how to reach us. DEMOCRATS STEP UP TO THE CHALLENGE

The Saltfest Parade in SoutH Hutchinson on Saturday June 14 was a great success for Reno County Democrats. While walkers, many of them wearing their "THINK BLUE" shirts handed out treats to the waiting children along the route, the largest number of Democratic candidates probably ever seen in Reno County drove their decorated vehicles along. It was a sight to behold: nominees for County Commission, Register of Deeds, State Senator and Representative made an impressive showing. This kind of involvement and public exposure can't be ignored by voters. Details of the upcoming 4th of July parade will be available soon. This is our chance to show Hutchinson and visitors from around the county that they have a choice. Clear your schedule for the morning of Friday July 4th and join with other Democrats to celebrate. There have been some difficulties in getting this project up and running. The need to provide an easily accessible way for voters to connect to the Reno County Democratic Party is evident from all the comments received. Our goal is to provide information regarding regular meetings, upcoming events (parades, rallies, fundraisers). When this blogger becomes more proficient there will be photos to share.

REGULARLY SCHEDULED MEETINGS:

Last Wednesday Meeting - Obviously held the last Wednesday of every month from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at the Great Wall/Mongolian Buffet, 1528 E 17th in Hutchinson. Speakers and programs vary. There are no dues but memberships to the Cornerstone Club helps to support activities and candidates. Reno County Democratic Women - Meetings held the second Tuesday of each month, noon to
